This original quilt design was hand drafted, it is still my favorite design process. I chose dark grayed down jewel tones and low contrast because I wanted the viewer to be drawn in to see the intricate piece work. Machine pieced and extensively hand quilted. Third in the series, Rain, includes several challenges. Wanting a 3-dimensional design using the series original fractal wheels and wanting to develop techniques for curved foundation piecing, the design answer was umbrellas. Hand quilting without a frame enhances the illusion of rain.

The idea was to make a quilt using up a box of left over pieces of fabrics. It started because I was organizing my studio and looking in boxes. I also found a six inch quilt block I had made during a class with Karen Stone, at Jinny Beyer's Hilton Head Seminar, years ago. The design for this quilt was not preplanned. I made blocks then played with the layout. Using two center squares to give added depth and a border of spikes to complement the pattern of the blocks finished the design. This quilt is a history of my quilts. Machine pieced and hand quilted Completed in September 2013 Dimemsions 57"x 57" In the collection of the artist. |

Original design. This study in color is also a study of drafting a 10 pointed star. For me drafting quilt patterns is one of the most rewarding parts of designing a geometric quilt. I like the way the color dances in this quilt. It almost moves. All 1/4" strips are appliqued and the only construction sewing on the quilt top. A total of 70 quilting threads were used to match every diamond color exactly. Hand applique and hand quilted. 100% cotton fabric, batting and thread used. This is my black and white quilt. While auditioning different accent fabrics I found my eye going to that stack instead of the black and white stack. I put the black and whites away and designed this quilt using the accents in the order they were stacked. To get that random stacked look I'd liked I used a block with only two pieces and stripped pieced fabrics to make those. Beading accents the border. Original Design. I was commissioned to design a quilt using the Gleason Grading System for prostate cancer. Incorporating the five stages of the grading system was the bases of my design of five radiating circles. In collecting fabric I chose those with perfect concentric circles and progressed to circles of irregular form, with no relationship to each other. I also chose many colors from neutrals to magentas ( a staining color). Machine pieced and hand quilted. 100% cotton fabric, batting and thread. Original Design. Helios Corona, the sun's crown. The hardest part of this quilt, cutting a beautifully pieced quilt into 4" strips to add the smaller solid strips. Original Design in the Art Nouveau style. In the initial design of this quilt I used the snowdrop not only for its design possibilities but also because of the snowdrop properties that have been tested and used in the treatment for Alzheimer's patients. As the design evolved my mother was entering the last stages of Alzheimers. At the time I didn't realize how much my mother's illness was on my mind or how much it was influencing my design. When the quilt was finished I finally recognized what all the design choices in this quilt represented. The dark background was the unknown my mother now lives in. The spider web quilting (which I thought was a great design inspiration) I now know as the descriptive cob-webs that fill her mind. The bright white snowdrops; those precious, lucid, clear moments that all family members of an Alzheimer patient wait for and cherish. Machine pieced, extensively hand quilted. 100% cotton fabric and batting. Cotton and metallic thread used.
